The pregnant tourist who was brutally murdered in Puerto Rico Wednesday was looking forward to her upcoming wedding and the birth of her first child in May, her family told ABCNews.com
Sara Kuszak was five months pregnant, engaged and looking forward to the rest of her life. Then, on Wednesday, while vacationing in Puerto Rico with her fiancé and friends, this Georgia woman’s future was cut short after her morning jog turned deadly.
Márquez confessed to members of the Homicide Division of the Criminal Investigation Unit to having raped and killed Sarah Kuszak yesterday in Puerto Rico’s Fajardo municipality. Kuszak was an American tourist from Savannah Georgia. She was six months pregnant.
According to Antonio López, head of the Criminal Investigations Unit, Márquez claims he saw Sara Kuszak as she was jogging down a road. He then proceeded to open the trunk of his car and wait until she passed by. He then overpowered Kuszak and forced her into the trunk of his vehicle.
Kuszak was abducted, stuffed into the trunk of a car and found murdered in a field. While in the trunk, Kuszak managed with her cell phone to call a marina employee and provide them with a description of the kidnapper’s car. The employee then called 9-1-1. Unfortunately, it was too late.
"Sara was a devoted daughter, a free spirit and a person who had a love for life," said Joan Lang, the mother of Sara Kuszak, who was kidnapped and murdered after going for a jog on the Caribbean island.
Kuszak, 35, who had arrived from her home in Savannah, Ga., the night before she was found dead with her throat slashed, was a little more than five months pregnant with a baby boy, her mother said.
Lang said she believes her daughter was simply keeping up with her exercise routine when she emarked on a walk early Wednesday morning. Kuszak, who had been an avid runner before she became pregnant, was forced into a man's trunk in Fajardo, in eastern Puerto Rico, authorities said.
Authorities traced the signal from a cell phone call Kuszak had made from her kidnapper's car, an hour before she was found dead, to 36-year-old Eliezer Marquez Navedo, who has reportedly been charged with two counts of rape and one count of kidnapping. confessed to the random killing but has not yet been charged.
Based on Kuszak’s information, police arrested a local man whose clothing was covered with blood. He was not immediately charged, the Associated Press reports, and claimed the blood came from his brother’s horses. "He saw the woman and kidnapped her," said Lt. Angel Ocasio. "He didn’t take anything. He stole her life." This is just terrible, gruesome and makes us question humanity. Our hearts go out to Kuszak’s family.
