Brazilian Model Mariana Bridi da Costa Dead at 20

A beautiful Brazilian model Mariana Bridi da Costa, whose hands and feet were amputated after her body was ravaged by a devastating infection, died early Saturday. "Unfortunately Mari couldn't resist any longer. She passed away at 3 a.m. today," Henrique Fontes, executive director of Miss World Brazil said.

Da Costa, who first sought medical attention in December, developed an infection that forced doctors to perform the amputations and extract part of her stomach as well as both kidneys. The model first sought medical help in December and was diagnosed with kidney stones. Doctors prescribed medication and sent her home, but she returned to the hospital and was then diagnosed with a urinary tract infection that quickly developed into septicemia. Septicemia, triggered by a bacterial infection, causes insufficient blood flow that can lead to organ failure.

Sadly, da Costa's parents have lost their daughter at the young age of 20. As a parent, I cannot fathom the pain they are going through, losing a child, whatever the age, is unimaginable

I'd be very careful around hospitals if I were any of you, especially if you are feeling a bit ill. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an everyday germ. If Ms. da Costa died from a multidrug-resistant variety, this could have been an iatrogenic infection by an opportunistic pathogen residing right at the hospital itself.
